Backstory

Like any great (and not so great) space opera series this had to be a trilogy. This trilogy kicks off with "First Contact." (I was annoyed when the Star Trek movie by the same name appeared the next year.) As you might expect from the title, it's about the first contact between humans and aliens--in this case the reptilian S'Parnians, who are sort of vampires. Instead of sucking down your blood they feed upon your life force that they refer to as bio-energy.

Their own world devastated by wars and natural disasters, the S'Parnians took to space in order to find new sources of bio-energy. Over a distant planet destined to become the first human colony outside the solar system, the first contact between humans and S'Parnians takes place.

Needless to say it doesn't go well.
